A Biographical Addendum: Ioan Lupaș in the Atmosphere of 1919

The numerous studies dedicated to the historian Ioan Lupaș, including critical editions, may give the impression that there are no unknown fragments remaining in his biography today. However, upon reviewing these older and more recent historiographical contributions, I found that all authors summarised the transformation Lupaș underwent in 1919 in just one sentence, mentioning the end of his mission as archpriest in Săliște and the beginning of his academic career in Cluj. That is why I chose this case study to examine in detail what the turning point year of 1919 meant for the Transylvanian scholar. To reconstruct this year in his biography, to weigh his ecclesiastical, cultural, political, and finally, didactic activity, I have combined information gathered from various sources. In the absence of memoirs or a diary kept by the historian, we have resorted to the memoirs of some of his contemporaries, his correspondence, mentions in the press of the time, documents from the archives in Cluj and Săliște, his speeches, as well as numerous scientific articles.
