Abstract
In the early years of the interwar period, travel was one of the means by which inhabitants of the various regions of Greater Romania could interact and become acquainted with one another. Based on contemporary debates about the role of travel as a means of getting to know the country and strengthening spiritual unity, this paper offers an analysis of Romanian society in the early interwar years, as reflected in travel accounts. During a time when the „iron roads” constituted the main transportation infrastructure, the railway station and the train became spaces where people from different backgrounds, with diverse mentalities and behaviours, met and interacted. The image of these interactions reveals both everyday habits and practices, as well as how society expressed its tensions, aspirations, and frustrations during this period of reorganisation and redefinition within the new framework of Greater Romania.
